The Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) is a 20-item self-report screening measure use to identify patient who will benefit from additional assessment and possible treatment of depressive symptomatology (Santor & Coyne, 1997). The CES-D is intended to measure depressive symptoms in the general population (i.e. non-psychiatric persons older than 18). Please note that these results should not be used as an instrument of diagnosis, but rather to orientate the presence and severity of symptoms consistent with the criteria of the DSM-IV. The authors warn against the use of this instrument as a sole diagnostic measure, as depressive symptoms may be part of other primary diagnostic disorders. Participants involved in the iSPOT-D will receive a clinical interview and face-to-face assessment as required for diagnosis.
